YOUTH PROJECT ARCHIVE

History.
For over twenty years the Society has promoted an annual youth project. First introduced in 1980-1981, with sponsorship from the Irish National Insurance Co., the aim was to encourage young people to research our cultural heritage.

The competition was arranged in two classes: for those under 14 years old; and for those under 19 years old. In addition to monetary prizes the over-all winner was to receive a perpetual trophy. The first competition attracted 42 projects, the over-all winners being a group from Ballymurphy National School. From 1997 trophies were awarded to the overall winner in the two sections, group and individual.

It is a tribute to all concerned: organising committee; sponsors; judges; and teachers, that the project has continued down the years with its very worthwhile aim. Personnel have changed, sponsors have changed, trophies and prizes have changed, and the classes have changed, but the good work continues. The projects have taken a variety of formats including essays, photographs, drawings, maps, posters and models.

The quality of the best material has always been very high; a note is included below of projects which were subsequently published or provided material for publication.
