METALWORKERS, IRONMONGERS ETC.

Research on the metalworkers of the city and county of Kilkenny was undertaken in pursuance of an ambitious 'metalwork project' which was conceived and co-ordinated by our late member Dorcas Birthistle. The aim of the project was to record the metalwork of Kilkenny city, street by street, items from manhole covers to name plaques being listed and described, sketched or photographed. Whilst the project was of major importance in bringing these often overlooked items to the attention of the public in general, it did not create the important historical record which had been intended.

A body of research was created relating to metalworkers working in the city or county at various times and it has been agreed that the material which was gathered from newspapers, directories etc. be made available here.

One major source which has not been incorporated is an article 'Blacksmiths in Kilkenny' by Dan McEvoy which appeared in Old Kilkenny Review 1994. This is an interesting and useful piece and is reproduced in its entirety as an appendix: Kilkenny Blacksmiths.

We shall be pleased to receive any information on the topic, with appropriate dates and sources, which readers have and which they feel would be a useful addition to the body of work here.
