Hello, I am looking for anyone who knew the family of Margaret McCarthy of Cuffesgrange, Co. Kilkenny. Her sisters were Mary, Josie and Chris and one who passed away young named Kathleen. All I know is that Margaret, my Grandmother, got into a lot of mischief and I would love to hear more stories about her if anyone out there knows the family. She would often tell me stories about the lime tree and well in the centre of town, the schoolhouse and that she got hit by the school bus several times and I think ended up causing the driver to quit! Margaret moved to London during WWII to work in the land army, married a Canadian soldier and came to Canada with twins in 1945. If anyone knew her I look forward to hearing from you at fergju@hotmail.com Thank you

Hello, I was happy to find this very interesting and informative web-site. I was wondering if someone out there could inform me how I should start and whom I should contact if I have very little information to begin with. I actually only have a name (MANOGUE), and a family note saying that the family was from Kilkenny. The genealogical page stated that you should send as much information as possible. However, a friend suggested that through this site I may be able to find someone who could do a family name search to see if there were any Manogue's in this county in the time frame I am searching (ca. 1830's). That way I would not be asking the researchers to do an extensive search until I was sure I was in the right area. I would appreciate anyone's advice on this matter SO very much as I am at a standstill with this branch. Thank you for your time. Karen (Crowley) Roettele KRoettele@aol.com

I am looking for information relating to building which I understand is due for 'listing' sometime in the future. It is "Castle Bamford" and I understand that it is an imposing ruin, now sitting in open farmland about 2 miles south of Kilkenny just off the road to Clonmel. Being a 'BAMFORD' myself with roots in North Antrim, I am curious to know how and when the Bamford's came to the Kilkenny area. If anyone can provide a photograph or some details on either the property or the family history, I would be grateful. Should anyone be interested, please find below a link to the bamford website: http://www.nireland.com/gavinbamford/ I understand that the owner may be a Mr. William Dalton, Talbotsinch, Freshford Rd, Kilkenny. Thank you Gavin Bamford

I am looking for the James Kerwin & Ellen Bergin family. They had 6 kids who went to the USA. I know of 4 of them but not the other 2. Lawrence, Johanna, Mary and James Kerwin. Lawrence, Ann and James came to NYC on the ship Shannon from Liverpool in 1850. Lawrence, Johanna and Mary came to the state of Illinois in the USA, where my family was born. Lawrene was 19 yrs old when he came to the USA. He married Mary Cahill in IL and they had 6 sons. James was 23 and Ann was 21 when they came over. Ann is related to this family but not sure how yet. Johanna and Mary came over a couple years later and married in Illinois. Johanna married George Damery and Mary Kerwin married Daniel Doyle. On Lawrence's civil war record it says he is from the town of Cullen. In Johanna's obit it says that they are from Kilkenny and that they were six siblings. Mary's death cert gives the names of James Kerwin as father and Ellen Bergin as mother. I would like to find more info on my Kerwin's. Thanks SALLY sjhathaway@aol.com

I'm trying to trace a relation. I believe that Count O'Loughlin, who was the Donor of St. John's Church in Kilkenny, was the uncle of my great grandmother, Elizabeth Free. If my information is correct, her mother, Bridget O'Loughlin, who married her father, Thomas Free, was a sister of Count O'Loughlin. I notice that there is an article 'O'Loughlin Memorial Church of St. John the Evangelist, Kilkenny' in the 2001 issue of the 'Old Kilkenny Review' (pps. 103-123), which I will try to get. Any information on him or his family would be much appreciated. My e-mail is lepanto@catholic.org - Thomas Murphy 21/5/04

My ancestors seem likely to have emigrated from County Kilkenny around 1860. Their names are Richard GOREY and Ellen GRENNAN. The surnames are not common in Ireland but both last names are found in the Griffiths Valuation for Co Kilkenny. Richard and Ellen married in Ireland about 1853 and had four children born there between 1854 and 1860 - Michael, Elizabeth, James and Patrick. The male names are commonly used with the Grennans and Goreys in the valuation. Would anyone be able to link these people to their Irish roots? Thanks, Cheryl phloors@suscom-maine.net

MICHAEL FRANCIS KANE (spelling may have changed at Ellis Island) Geetings, I am searching for information on my grandfather's side of the family from Kilkenny Co. Grandpa's name was MICHAEL FRANCIS KANE. Grandpa left Ireland in 1911 or 1912. MICHAEL F. KANE'S birth year is approx. 1886-1889 and believed to be the son of JAMES KANE / ANASTASIA MORAN who (MAY) have been from Reevanagh or Castlecomer areas. Grandpa met my grandmother, CATHERINE MULHALL (MICHAEL MULHALL/MARY LAWLER--from Ballyfoyle) at a dance somewhere in Ireland when he came home to visit from the US (March-1920). Several months later he asked her to join him in the States where they married and lived in ROCHESTER, MN (USA). Grandpas was a farmer and worked as the keeper for all of the animals at St. Mary's Hosp in Rochester. They had 8 children. It is believed that Michael had brothers -- a couple supposedly named MARTIN KANE and JAMES KANE -- and possibly another who he left Ireland with and started out in Canada, then believed that brother moved to another country, maybe Australia, and may have soon after died there. It is also said that grandpa had a brother who became a CATHOLIC PRIEST, who may have remained in Ireland. It is certain that he had a niece, ANASTASIA, who became a CATHOLIC NUN and for certain she remained in Ireland--although still unknown information on specifics. I recently visited Ireland and met my grandmother's side of the family, however, nobody knew my grandfather or anything about him or his family. I would appreciate any and all information that anyone is willing to share...even if dead ends...I'm there already! Thank you in advance for any help. My email address: PMartini952@aol.com Best Regards, Patricia

Greetings, Looking for ANY info on my grandfather and his family... MICHAEL FANCIS KANE...son of James Kane (and possibly) Anastasia (Moran) Kane, (thought) to be from the Reevanagh or Castlecomer area--not certain. Michael's birth year is approx.(1886-1889) (MAYBE 03, October) and he came to the US in 1912. He met my grandmother..CATHERINE MULHALL--born to Michael Mulhall and Mary (Lawler) from Ballyfoyle, Co.Kilkenny--at a dance in 1920 when he returned to Ireland for a visit. Later in 1920 Catherine moved to (Rochester, MN) USA where she married Michael and they had 8 children. Michael was a farmer and he worked for St. Mary's Hosp in Rochester tending the animals and helping the nuns. It is believed that Michael has a number of brothers..MARTIN AND JAMES KANE..could most likely be two of them. He also had a niece who became a CATHOLIC NUN (Sr Anastasia who remained in Ireland), and said to have a brother who became a CATHOLIC PRIEST, name unknown. ANY information will be appreciated. Please contact me at: PMartini952@aol.com if you can help. Best Regards, Patricia

email address: joseph.moore@hccsj.nf.ca Any ideas on how and where I could start find records for these Dwyer siblings. The bible says Waterford Ireland and family lore has "County Kilkenny, Ireland, maybe Mooncoin up the river from Waterford." Dwyer siblings: Alice, Richard (b Jan 1, 1798), Edward James( bc 1802), Thomas (bc 1806), John Thomas and James. Information in old family Bible that "Richard was born in Waterford Ireland in 1798, New year's day. He came to Fogo Island (Nfld) at about age 10 in an ?prentice to a merchant Duder." Later his sister Alice, brothers Edward James and Thomas came to Fogo Nfld. A brother James was to have died in school in Ireland from a beating before these 3 left for Nfld. Also Edward James was to have mastered several languages and all were quite literate. I welcome any comments for this long time quest.

Looking for decendants of Martin Brennan, son of Patrick & Margaret Brennan (Rowe) who was born in Railyard, Castlecoma, Co Kilkenny approx 1878. Martin left Ireland because "he believed that an honest man was unable to speak his mind without suffering punishment from those above". Martin moved to the Northeast of England and met and married an Ellen Brennan, herself from Queens County. They lived first at 10 Victoria Terrace, Newcastle and then 24 Blackett Terrace, Newcastle where he died on 25th May 1923. I believe there was also another brother named Thomas who also moved to the Northeast of England. Anyone knowing of the family could you please contact by e-mail at: george@forster67.fsnet.co.uk Many thanks

I am in the process of tracing my family in Ireland.I have gone back from around 1900in Leeds but have hit a brick wall once it gets to Ireland.I know that Dennis Brophy and his father Martin Brophy were from Ireland. I have a marriage certificate of Dennis Brophy and Bridget Byrn on the 15/9/1851 at St Patricks Roman Catholic Chapel in the district of Leeds. It states Dennis was a labourer aged 24. He must therefore have been born around 1827 in Ireland. His father Martin was a Carpenter. Bridgets father was called Jeremiah Byrn. I do not know even if they were born in Kilkenny but I believe that the county is one of possibly 4 they may have come from. Dennis was lodging at the house of an Ann Clooney at 13 Lower Cross St in Leeds. The problem I have is that there is no information that I have seen that actually states what the county or parish is that he comes from. Dennis had 4 childrennamely Catherine/Margaret/ Martin and John(my great grandfather). Subsequently John had 5 children John (my grandfather/Emily/Catherine (who married Frank May / Mary Francis who married Thomas Wild and Margaret who married John Barry. I would like to hear from any descendants of the family who did not come to England(if any) or anyone who could shed any light on my query. I can be contacted on brophyj@medimmune.com or JOHN@jacksonmews.fsnet.co.uk

Hello. My name is William Elwell. I, like many others here are basically searching for our roots. I had the pleasure to stay in Kilkenny for two days last summer (Aug 2003). While there I did attempt to locate any possible relatives. Unfortunately, I did not have enough information with me to complete my task. Reasons for that are another story. My grandmother was CATHERINE FRANCIS O"HANLON. She emigrated to the US about 1924(?). I have a copy of a letter (dated Feb 1953) written to here by her uncle John who lived at 36 Assumption Place, Kilkenny (I wish I had that address with me when I visited). If anyone can put me into contact with any members of the family I would be eternally grateful. I can be contacted via email at homebrewer_99@yahoo.com. Thank you.

Working on our Haligan geneology project, we have traced the line to Kilkenny. Some sources say Thomastown and Glen Moore and Rathpatrick. Our Thomas and Anastasia Walsh Halligan came to the United States in the early 1850's and settled with their eight children in central Illinois. We have lots of fun & interesting info on them from that point on... Thomas Halligan was the son of Stephen Halligan and Catherine O'Brien Halligan, baptized Oct. 26, 1802. He had of brothers & sisters the following: Michael, baptized May 9, 1797;Mary, bap. July 1798; Jony, bap. April 24, 1800; Ellen, bap.June 2, 1805; and John, bap. November 25, 1808. This is according to the Slieverue Parish Records/Register 5, page 441, 423, 389, 367. Register 4 page 10,39 & 81. Their son, Thomas Halligan II served in the American Civil War. We are, of course, looking for a connection there that anyone can tell us of. We were in Kilkenny in Sept. 2002 & are planning to return in Sept. of 2005 and of course, would like to meet some relatives if possible. Thank you greatly for any info that can be sent to us at: mztree@mtco.com . Genny & Randy (Mangan Halligan)Gibbs Metamora, Illinois 61548

Hello - My name is Sarah Nees. I am an undergraduate student at Kent State University in the United States. I am doing an independent research project detailing the compelling similarities between Chaucer's Alice of Bath and Alice le Kyteler of Kilkenny, Ireland. It seems that one of your earliest issues of the Old Kilkenny Review may have some information available that may be useful to me. My university does not carry the Old Kilkenny Review at the Library, so I am unable to access the articles I need through the school. Is it possible to order a facimile through your society? If so, I'd be forever in your debt. Either way, I appreciate your time and assistance. Have a wonderful day. Sincerely, Sarah Nees 357 East Park Blvd Akron, Ohio, 44305 USA email: scunert@kent.edu

If anyone knows of this family would they please contact me at ritapath@cox.net. ANY information would be truly appreciated.

I am researching my Healey (Healy/Hely) ancestors. I have located the following marriage records in the Roman Catholic archdiocese of St. John's, Newfoundland: Married James Hely of Kilmacow, County Kilkenny, to Mary Heffernan of Petty Harbour [Newfoundland] on November 25, 1828. Also, the marriage of Edmond Healey of "Kilmachoe" to Mary Sexton of St. John's [Newfoundland] on April 7, 1792. I am trying to link either of these gentlemen back to Kilmacow, or to find ANY Healey/Healy/Hely information in Kilmacow around this time frame. Please note: James Hely is a direct ancestor of mine, but I have not found any link between James and Edmond. If anyone has any information or suggestions, I would be most appreciative. Best regards.
