Notes for intending contributors to The Society welcomes submissions of articles or items of interest from non-members as well as from members. Responsibility: Contributors submit material at their own responsibility, and are advised to retain a copy. Originality: Submissions should not have been published elsewhere. Please advise the Editor of earlier or pending publication of the material, or any part thereof. Length: The preferred length of articles is up to 5,000 words. Short articles and submissions of items of interest are particularly welcomed. Presentation: Contributions should be typewritten with wide margins on one side of A4 paper. If possible the contribution should be accompanied by a PC-formatted 3.5 inch disk which must match the hard copy exactly. Please label disks clearly and save as Word for Windows. Format: The layout should follow the format:- Title; Name of author; Text; Appendices and /or Tables; Acknowledgements; Bibliography or Notes & Sources. References: References should be restricted to those really necessary and useful. They should be numbered consecutively in the text. The full list should be headed either Bibliography or Notes & Sources, as appropriate, and should follow the style:
Illustrations: The legend to appear with illustrations should be written on, or attached to, the back thereof. The contributor is responsible for obtaining permission for reproduction from the copyright holder. If illustrations are to appear at specific points in the text this should be indicated; every effort will be made to comply with such instructions. In the absence of instructions location will be at the Editor’s discretion. Tables: When preparing tables bear in mind the size of the page. References to tables in the text should be in the form (Table 1). Tables should appear as a separate file on disc and not be included in the text. Quotations: Should be enclosed in double inverted commas. Single inverted commas are used for quotations within quotations. Quotations over four lines in length should be indented, on a fresh line, without inverted commas. Italics. Will be used for the title of printed books, newspapers and periodicals. If the typescript does not include italics the words should be underlined. Abbreviations: Should be followed by a full stop: vol., Esq., Mr. Initial letters of journals or institutions do not require a full stop: KAS, OKR, NLI, RSAI. Capitals: Should be used sparingly. However, titles, place names, persons, months, days, nationalities, wars, treaties and specific institutions should have capitals. Spelling: English should be in accord with the Oxford English Dictionary. Irish should be in accord with deBhaldraithe’s English-Irish Dictionary. For uniformity please use ‘artefact’ and ‘medieval’. Note also the spelling of the Earldom of Ormond; and the Dukedom and Marquessate of Ormonde. Dates: Should appear in the format 7 May 1810, 1847-48 (not 1847-8). Centuries and other periods of time should be expressed in words: the eighteenth century; fifty years, and hyphenated when used adjectivally: twentieth-century documents. Use the abbreviation c. (not ca. or circa). Decades should be in figures: 1820s (not 1820’s). Numbers: Use figures for measurement: 6ft., 40 acres, but express time in words: five years, two weeks. Write all other numbers under 100 in words. Currency: Should be expressed in the currency of the period and should be in figures €2,500; €27.06; €0.75. Use £ for punts in the same format and the suffix stg. for sterling: £1.2s.9d. stg. Proofs: The article as submitted should be the finished version and should have been checked for grammar, spelling and content. Where submissions are not on disk a proof will be sent if time allows, which should be checked carefully for printer’s errors and omissions only (it is not an occasion for revision) and returned promptly. If you do not wish to do your own proof reading please advise the Editor. Biography: The Society may wish to include a brief biographical note of the author. Please submit details on a separate sheet (separate file), or state if you do not wish such a note to appear. These guidelines are not exhaustive. In cases where options are available be consistent. All correspondence relating to the journal should be addressed for the attention of the Hon. Editor, who will be pleased to have advance notice of articles in preparation, or subjects being researched. Submissions should be in the Editor’s hands by 1 September.
