YOUTH PROJECT

ARCHIVE 2

For many years Kilkenny Archaeological Society ran a Local History Project for Primary and Secondary Schools. This was a useful vehicle for young people to research and present a particular aspect of the history of their local area. Some excellent entries were submitted and a number of projects have been published in the Old Kilkenny Review. In 2005, the Youth Project Committee decided to adopt a different approach and focus the attention of teachers and students on Rothe House itself. Rothe House and its collections present a unique learning opportunity and the committee believed that schools should be encouraged to avail of this.
To facilitate this process, a school visit was designed for 5th and 6th Classes in the Primary School. With the introduction of the revised curriculum in history and the strong emphasis on local history, these visits were warmly welcomed by schools. The venture proved to be very successful.

Courtyards in Rothe House

Well in Courtyard

We are delighted to offer this visit during the coming school year. The cost of the visit is €50. Once a school is booked for a school visit, a Rothe House Pack is sent to the teacher. This includes information about the house to ensure that the visit is meaningful for the students and a range of suggestions for follow up activities.

When the class arrives, it will be split into two groups. One group does a trail throughout the courtyards and the house. This includes handling artefacts. The other group visits the library where they will look at old maps and copies of old newspapers. The two groups then swap over.
